Someone cleaning a cottage on Cleaves Street in Rockport Saturday came across the 75mm artillery shell and contacted police, police said.

The Massachusetts State Bomb Squad was called in to see if the artillery shell was still active, but an X-ray proved inconclusive.

Out of an abundance of caution, technicians safely detonated the ancient military tech at the Rockport Police Department gun range, located off Piggery Crossing without issue.

There is no threat to the community, police said.
